| Landscape and Culture Brian Mackay-Lyons, Author In traditional agrarian societies the cultural (or architectural) landscape was often in sustainable and in reciprocal balance with the natural landscape[e. Today we view architecture and development as destructive consumption of the landscape. We must re-establish the role of architect as steward of the landscape, and development as cultivation and improvement. The three competition sites heighten the tension between development and conservation. The schemes can play a didactic or subliminal role in educating the public about sustainable development. How does one build in a way that enhances the environment? |
